Starting today, 15 january 1994, there exists a mailing list
for discussion of OCR -- Optical Character Recognition --
which means the automatic reading of a text by a computer.

Anything related to OCR can be discussed on this list (from
handwriting recognition to OCR-ing strange alphabets to
barcode readers to anything else you can think of).

For instance, one might discuss experiences with various OCR
programs in various OCR projects, or the algorithms behind
OCR, or one might post funny misreadings by OCR programs.
Also the influence of OCR on copyright law might be an
interesting topic.

One of the goals of this mailing list is the creation of a
standard suite of TIFF files for benchmarking OCR software.
If you have suggestions for files that should be part of such
a suite, feel free to suggest them. Or, if such a suite
already exists, feel free to discuss it.

To subscribe to the mailing list, send mail to:

        ocr-request@phil.ruu.nl

Remember that this subscription request will not be
automatically processed, but will be read by a human being
(the administrators of this list).

To send e-mail to all members on the mailing list, send your
contributions to:

        ocr@phil.ruu.nl

The list is not moderated, so be careful. A "reply" to mail
on the list will go to the originator of the message; a
"group-reply" will also send to the whole mailing list.

As there seems to be no other mailing list especially about
OCR (as far as we have been able to find out), nor a Usenet
newsgroup about OCR (yet), we hope this mailing list will be
useful.
