Greetings:

I did not ask to be placed on this list. What do you think I should do?
Participate? Complain? Is this involuntary servitude or what?

1. Purpose of the Seal Of Accessibility

The Seal of Accessibility will enable manufacturers to communicate to the
public that many of their products are usable by all consumers, including
those who experience functional limitations as a result of aging or disabling
conditions. The proposed Seal of Accessibility is a symbol (not yet defined)
that indicates a mainstream consumer electronics product can be used
successfully by people with functional limitations.

2. Objective of the Seal of Accessbility Committee

The committee has been formed within the EIA Consumer Electronics Group (CEG),

and in partnership with the Electronics Industries Foundation (EIF). It's
objectives are:

A. Develop accessible design guidelines that will enable manufacturers to
design products that will be easy to use by all consumers, including
those who experience functional limitations as a result of aging or disabling
conditions.

B. Create a marketing symbol that enables manufacturers to conveniently
communicate to consumers that a product is usable by individuals with
functional limitations.

3. Scope of Committee Work

The accessible design guidelines will address the following functional
limitations:

Blindness and low vision
Mobility and dexterity limitations
Speech limitations
Deafness and hearing loss
Perceptual and cognitive limitations

The accessible design guidelines will address the following consumer
electronics products:

Audio products
Video products
Telecommunications products
Home automation products
Home information products
Office and home office products

4. Seal of Accessibility Committee Structure

Committee Subgroup:

Guidelines Integration (Chairperson: Tim Farr)
Seal Marketing (Chairperson: Bill Boss)
Product Information Guidelines (Chairperson: Mike Paciello)
Vision Guidelines (Chairperson: Larry Scadden)
Hearing Guidelines (Chairperson: TBD)
Mobility/Dexterity Guidelines (Chairperson: TBD)
Perceptual/Cognitive Guidelines (Chairperson: Bruce Mahaffey)
Speech Guidelines (Chairperson: TBD)

5. The Product Information Guidelines Subgroup

Role: To establish guidelines for accessible product instruction manuals and
other forms of product information materials. All types of functional
limitations will be consider in these guidelines

Membership: Noted above

Output: Guidelines for accessible product information

I believe this will provide everyone with background information for the Seal.
I am trying to make arrangements to get the Seal Committee's development plan

in E-TEXT to distribute to you.

In the meantime, I would like you to begin sending me guidelines that you feel
must/should be included for product documentation/information manuals. For
right now, you can send this information to me directly either through the
Internet or at my FAX number which is (603) 881-0120.

Please remember that we must consider the needs of all functional limitations
within the guidelines.
