President Maurer's NFB network call

Hello fellow Federationists,
Sharon Gold contacted me today explaining that President Maurer
made a network phone call pertaining to pending legislation. I
took down this information over the phone in a hurry so please
excuse any inaccuracies. Here is the gist of the message.

The National Federation of the Blind needs our help. As scientists
and engineers, we know the important role braille plays in science
and engineering professions. As you may know, at Washington
Seminar NFB brought language to the attention of Congress asking
that blind children be taught braille. Specifically, the language
asks that each year a braille literacy assessment be done as a part
of the Individual Education Plan IEP for each blind child.

Congressman Trafficant will introduce an amendment to HR 6 the
Individuals with Disabilities Act IDEA during tomorrow's session on
Thursday, February 24, supporting this language. In other words,
Congressman Trafficant's amendment would give blind children the
opportunity to learn braille in school. Please ask your local
representative to support Congressman Trafficant's amendment to HR
6.
