MEMORANDUM

To: Members And Friends
          NFB R&D Committee

From: T. V. Cranmer, Chairman

Date: March 5, 1994

Subject: Cane research

Dr. Emerson Foulke has agreed to direct a project on behalf of the
R&D Committee to address issues raised by recent discussion on this
forum. Answers to these questions will be sought:

What metal, ceramic or other material could be used to make longer
lasting cane tips?

What is the function of the rubber portion of a cane tip when it is
on a straight, non-telescoping cane?

Can we identify a better coating material to protect the cane from
discoloration with age and use? Or, should the white pigment be
included throughout the material of the cane shaft?

If you have suggestions for Emerson, please post them here.
Clearly this group will have an ongoing interest in this project.
I should mention that the present scope of the project obviates the
original question concerning storing spare tips in the handle of
the cane.
