Hello:

This request for a Thai Dectalk is interesting comming when it does. I
have a friend who wants to work with the blind in Vietnam. I just contacted
Mike Paciello from DEC about what would be involved in making a Vietnamese
synthesizer. Here is the text of a brief reply I received regarding Thai.

Subject: DECtalk in Thai

Robert:
I saw your note to Mike Paciello. While we currently have no plans on
doing Thai (although we are working on a number of other languages), you could
get a DECtalk PC and use the phonetic utilities to try to create intelligible
speech in Thai. I suspect that the tones would be a problem but it might be
understood. Don't know that much about the Thai sound system. Success in doing
that would depend on the "distance" between English and Thai segmental phonemes.
        Hope this is helpful.
