Greetings:

The following was passed to me by Mark Novak, chairman of DACX:
Disability Action Committee for X. I am still trying to persuade
somebody from DACX to come to the NFB convention and speak before
the Computer Science Division. Perhaps Beth Mynatt will feel
more charitably disposed if she gets more letters of support for
her commercialization grant project.

Greetings:

First off, I would like to thank everyone who ventured to "Sunny"
California for the recent CSUN conference and attended the DACX
meeting. I trust everyone has returned, and was able to leave
without too much interference or trouble caused by the
after-shock earthquake.

I made a quick head count once during the meeting, and despite
the fact that people were coming and going through out the
evening, I noted an audience of 44 people at one point during the
DACX meeting. To say that interest and excitement over what DACX
has done and is in the process of doing is growing rapidly, would
be a "conservative" under-statement. I received numerous
compliments regarding "DACX" throughout the conference, and I
want you all to know that your work is being appreciated at every
level, not just by individuals with disabilities. :-)

It will take perhaps a week or more until I can transcribe and
distribute the DACX meeting minutes and also notes from the X
Windows session that Will, Beth, Earl, Gregg, and I presented at
CSUN. In the meantime, I want to pass along several other items
of interest to everyone in the group.

#1. Curtis Chong, President of the National Federation of the
Blind in Computer Science would like someone from the DACX group
to address their NFBCS group in July, at the NFB national
conference. Anyone interested in participating may wish to
contact Curtis directly at <73443.1351@compuserve.com>

#2. Several people asked again for the address of the
"UnWindows" files. Please ftp to the following and direct any
questions to Rick.

< The updated ftp file and accompanying README file are available
at ftp.cs.rpi.edu via ftp, gopher, and Mosaic. A copy of
sample.un_sound has also been place there for those who are
interested only in that file. Rick Kline, kliner@cs.rpi.edu >

#3. Last week just prior to CSUN, many of you should have
received an email from Beth Mynatt at GA Tech regarding her need
of answers to many questions regarding users with visual
impairments as related to some internal funding she is seeking.
If you did not receive this note, please contact either Beth at
<beth@cc.gatech.edu> or myself (address of this memo) and either
of us will be happy to get you a copy. Many of you are always
asking how you can get more involved in DACX. This would be a
great way to get started. :-)

#4. Also just prior to CSUN, Will Walker posted two email
messages regarding the "Minutes from the Intrinsics Hooks
Meeting" and "Announcing the x-agent mailing list". If anyone
would like another copy of either message, contact Will at
<wwalker@zk3.dec.com> or myself, and we will see to it that
another copy is sent your way. Perhaps more importantly, those
of you interested in the x-agent mailing list need the following
info:

<To request an address to be added to the list, send a message to
x-agent-request@x.org with the body of the message containing
subscribe [<address>]where, if you have an address different from
the automatically generated address in your email, [<address>] is
the address to be added. Once added, to contribute to the
discussion,

         send a message to: x-agent@x >

Please FOLLOW the requested email address. The X Consortium is offering a
"golden" opportunity for public participation. Circumventing this
mechanism and directing email to anyone directly or indirectly related to
this activity within the X Consortium is going to be highly "frowned" upon.

#4. I would like to say thanks to all the DACX subcommittee
chairs who presented updates for everyone's benefit during the
DACX meeting. Almost every topic initiated some very good
follow-on discussion. I also would like to note a special thanks
to Leedy Day for volunteering to lead the discussion of other
accessibility options we should ALL be thinking about in regards
to X, as we move forward with the DACX group (note, I avoided the
use of everyone's favorite new term, "modality"!).

#5. No set date was selected for the next DACX meeting. If we
follow along the lines of last year, we would automatically meet
at CtG in the Fall. If anyone has ideas for something different,
please email your ideas to me over the next couple of months
(preferably months prior to any conferences of interest) :-).
You may not realize it, but I will need to reserve a room for
DACX to meet at CtG by mid to late August (CtG is Oct. 18-22nd,
this year).

#6. Finally, we are hoping to use the talents of various DACX
members to develop some publicity (articles, etc.) regarding DACX
and the work it is doing. If anyone wishes to take part in this
activity, please let me know as I'll happily create a new DACX
email subgroup to ease the communication burden among those
directly involved.

Thanks..... :-)
