On the subject of infrared links to consumer devices, I'm told that
the infrared link protocol used in Hewlett-Packard's devices is fast
becoming the defacto standard, and is likely to eventually be approved
as industry standards by the various standards bodies. Has anyone
looked closely at this specification to see if it is appropriate for
the uses to which we would want to put it? Specifically whether it
can be implemented at a low enough cost to go into low-end devices
and also whether it lends itself to shielded communications as would
be required in ATMs etc.?
