MEMORANDUM
To: Members And Friends
NFB R&D Committee
From: T. V. Cranmer, Chairman
Subject: Passing on comments from Steve Jacobson
Date: May 20, 1994
Thank you Steve for your cautious appraisal of Windows Bridge. This is a
matter of such Importance to all of us that I feel your message should
be passed on to the R&D list. I have had a few calls from blind guys in
urgent need of speech access to Windows in order to perform their jobs. I
will be suggesting to these and future callers that they ask for a demo copy
to see if it will solve their work problems.
You should be prepared to talk about your experience at our convention. I
will be contacting Mr. Chong to discuss the best place for you to talk; NFB
in Computer Science, the R&D Committee meeting, or both.
Here is Steve's message:
==============================
Subject: SlimWare WINDOW Bridge
Dr. Cranmer,
During the past several weeks, I have been experimenting some with
SlimWare Window Bridge Version 1.30, the demo version. Although the demo
limits the time per session, and although my experience is still
limited, this product does seem to do what its advertising claims. Let
me hastily add the qualification that it performs within the norms of
advertising exaggeration. Upon Curtis Chong's recommendation, I have
also spoken with Dale Hayes in Nebraska who had generally good things to
say about this product. This has been a surprise to some of us who have
tended to be somewhat skeptical of Syntha-voice product claims. However,
this appears to be a solid product.
As you probably know, this area could virtually explode at any time with
product offerings from Henter-Joyce, Microtalk, and probably GW Micro.
Of course, Artic's WinVision is also already out there, and Blazie has
something.
Is there information that I can provide from my exposure to the demo
version that would be of help? What did you have in mind? Also, I
believe thatthe gentlement on NFB-RD from Switzerland uses this product.
I suspect that many of us will be using WINDOWS within the next two
years.
Regards,
Steve Jacobson
