people with disabilities in the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics
(SEM). The two primary objectives of this project are: 1) increase the
enrollment and graduation rate of students with disabilities in the SEM fields;
and 2) research the the factors that contribute to this underrepresentation.

Coordinator Responsibilities

The primary function of the Project Coordinator will be to manage the daily
operations of the project under the direction of the principal investigators.
This project involves:

departments at the University of Illinois,

-- and teachers in local high schools.

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for: managing staff; distributing
funds (mini-grants); hiring of additional support staff; obtaining and

families with information and resources so that they can
successfully compete in the SEM education at the high school
     and university levels.

3. Develop a peer support system at the high school level so

attitudes of University of Illinois professors in the
colleges of science, engineering, and mathematics.

8. Implement a mentoring system where at least one professor in
each department will be responsible and available to
interact with the students with disabilities in their
department and mediating on their behalf.

9. Create a peer support system at the university level where
experienced students would serve as support to freshman
regarding issues such as surviving the transition to
university life, obtaining resources and advocacy.

10. Create a role model system for college and high school
students with disabilities where professionals with
disabilities in SEM fields will interact with the students
facilitated by the use of Internet.

11. Foster long term changes in the teaching of SEM courses at
the university level to facilitate the increased integration
of students with diabilities, especially into laboratory
classes. This will be enhanced through offering incentive
     grants.

12. Facilitate the recruitment of students with disabilities by
SEM departments at the University of Illinois.

13. Create long term change in the general public's perception
of the opportunities available to people with disabilities
     in SEM careers.

14. Investigate the causes for the underrepresentation of
students with disabilities in the SEM curriculum and
