I'm sorry if my answers are up the wrong tree. If you like, Gary, we could
take this to private e-mail to discuss the gorey details.
1. If you can do a lot of your project without windows (Xwindows) access,
then hang on to your dos-based terminal emulator (procomm, kermit, qmodem,
etc.) and/or ncsa telnet, pctcp, etc. (if you're lan connected). Then you
can login to the AIX box using a standard terminal interface, similar to
the one you use to get to bigcap, except that you get a shell instead of a
menu-driven system.
I can help you deal with curses-based programs, and other screen-oriented
stuff under Unix. This is really quite easy.
2. When you get to the Xwindows stuff, the answers aren't quite as easy.
IBM is working on a project to bring speech to the X environment under AIX,
and, rumour has it that they are doing rather well at making progress. I
don't know if they are ready for external alpha testing yet, though they
might be willing to strike up negotiations.
3. I know that X will run under OS/2, but I'm not sure X will run with IBM
Screen reader for OS/2 under OS/2. If it will, you could use that to
access the X programs on the AIX box, assuming you're lan connected. Mail
me for details on this point.
4. I'm going out on a limb for this one, but I do know that there is a
version of macX which will run on Macintosh computers. I do not know how
well this program would work with Outspoken, if it would work at all, but
it might be worth a try. You'll need a fairly powerful mac which can take
an ethernet card and which will run under system 6. This means you'll need
a mac II of some sort and which, according to many people now, is fairly
out of date. I'd call Berkeley systems and ask if anyone has tried
Outspoken with MacX.
