Subject: Braille Guide Dots
Curtis and I have been working some with Randy Formenti on some changes
to NFBTRANS. As part of this process, I need to know what the rules are
concerning guide dots on such tabular data as tables of contents.
Specifically, is there a minimum number of guide dots that must appear?
I have never seen one or two, for example. Also, if there is not enough
room to emboss the minimum number of guide dots between a title and a
page number, do the rules define what is to be done. Should guide dots
be replaced with blanks, or should the final word of the title be placed
on a separate line so that guide dots can be added?

It seems reasonable to me to simply replace guide dots with blanks when
ther is room for fewer than three of them. However, perhaps someone out
there knows if there are specific rules governing this. Thanks for your
help.

Regards,
Steve Jacobson
