Hi Steve,

I will try to respond to your inquiry concerning guide dots.
Before me I have "English Braille, American Edition." This is the
official rule book for Standard English Braille as used in the
United States. It was originally published in 1959, but several
additions and corrections have been issued since, which I also have.

Rule III deals with format. In that Rule, Section 15b deals
with contents pages. I will quote for you verbatim what the rule
has to say about guide dots:

"''' The chapter numbers and/or headings should start at the
left-hand margin and the braille page numbers should be placed at
the right-hand margin. A series of dot 5 should be used for the
guide lines, and a space must be left both after the chapter heading
and before the page number. Unless there is space for two or more
guide dots between the end of the chapter headings and the page
number, the guide dots should be omitted, but there must be at
least one space between the end of the heading and the number
sign of the page number. When a long heading requires two or more
lines, leave at least six spaces between the last word of each
line of the heading and the right-hand margin. All continuations
of chapter headings should begin in the third cell of the line.
'''"

I hope this is enough information for your purpose. From time
to time, questions arise which are answered in NBA or CTEVH
workshops. Rulings are also made from time to time by NLS. If you
need more help or information, I will try to supply it.
Meanwhile, good luck!

Cordially and sincerely,

Abraham Nemeth, Ph.D.
