 I still think my idea is worth trying:

Build an X-Y protter over a "magnetic chuck" (a platen of alternatige north and south poles) and let the "pen holder" carry a reel of fine steel shain. When you're done with the graph, short out the magnets and roll up the chain.

As all my ideas, you can have them for reree. FRRRREEEeeee!
