Hello:

In the recent past, I have been in communication with Dr. Parkes.
He has a system that he claims will allow a blind person to do CAD
(Computer Aided Design). I am forwarding to you a letter I just received
from Dr. Parkes.

Dear Robert,
Some time ago you wrote an email asking for further information
on capsule paper and my drawing system. I have been in UK giving
workshops at Queen Alexandra Colle, Birmingham Royal Institution
for the Blind, on Audio-Tactile graphics and CAD for blind people.
I can tell you that the CAD system and its cut down version built
into TouchBlasterNomad (contact APH Louisville, Tim Connell), were
very well received.
The TouchCAD Bumpy Pictures system is being developed at the University
of Newcastle (though I have recently retired) and will be released
for distribution early in the new year. It is my aim that end user price
be as LOW as possible (though the system is too complex for Shareware).
The essence of TouchCAD is that a blind person is able to DESIGN almost
anything that a fully sighted person is able to design. This is especially
so for diagrams, plans and so forth. The entire drawing is audio supported
and output may be in embossed mode (say to Versapoint or Index or so on) or
in vector mode, printed for distribution to sighted persons.
Braille is entered from the QWERTY keyboard for the embossed drawing
and may be placed anywhere and the same text may appear in print text
on the vector output.
I am intereseted to have the product distributed in the USA and shall
be very pleased to send an evaluation version to you. At this time it is necessary for you to have a TouchBlaster Nomad pad from APH ($1050 I think).
I can send you an evaluation disk of (ALPHA test) software if you have the pad
or can borrow the pad. You will need a version 6.0 software for TouchBlaster
Nomad. The TouchCAD system will finally work with Keynote Master Touch
by Pulse Data (Humanware Inc. in USA) and on another input device which
for now must remain confidential. For the time being I am looking forward to hear of your continuing interest?
The capsule paper to which I referred is made by the Royal Blind Society of New
South Wales, in Sydney Australia. I do not know whether they have the
resources to support overseas orders.
Best wishes
Dr. Don Parkes
