of you in light of some of our recent meetings,
and discussions and efforts.

Infrared Technology Meeting Announcement:

Greetings:

As part of the Project Curbcuts effort at the
Trace Center, University of WI-Madison, an open
meeting to discuss the topic of infrared communication
usage for public information & transaction system
will be held in conjunction with the California State
University , Northridge (CSUN) Conference, March 17th,
1995, 7-9:00 pm, Executive Suite 1, Los Angeles Airport
Marriott Hotel.

The meeting is being co-chaired by Mark Novak from the
Trace Center and Neil Scott from Stanford University.
The purpose of this meeting is to discuss issues regarding
the development of a bi-directional non-proprietary
infrared communication link, while also developing
"standards" or guidelines, where by individuals equipped
with specialized access devices could both locate and
interact with the various electronic information systems
in their environment, using the "standard" defined protocol
or guidelines. Also, to look at advocacy issues and to start
a dialog with product developers to get the ideas and
protocols of such a "standard" incorporated into as
wide a variety of main stream electronic devices as possible.

Possible Agenda Topics for CSUN Meeting

  information systems intended to be accessible

  specialized access devices (for sensory, physical impairments, etc.)
        a. what role do the devices play
        b. what role does the electronic information system play

  role of the infrared data link
        a. alternate input (kybd) interface
        b. alternate display
        c. alternate selection mechanism (kybd and display)

   link protocols
        a. initiation, how to re-start, language, inquiry (where-are we)
        b. packets, data, format, handshaking,
        c. parameter or protocol changes

  event synthesis on target device

  compatibility with existing standards, devices
        (talking signs, file transfer software, LANs, etc.)

Minutes from the CSUN meeting will be posted on the
Trace Center infrared work group list serve,
"irlink-l@trace.wisc.edu" shortly after the CSUN Conference.
For those of you who wish to contribute to the discussion
or development, but are unable to attend the conference,
please sign onto the list serve, which will serve as a
cyber work area for the project. We welcome your ideas
and discussion.
