Hello all,

I forwarded some postings from Blind-l to Liz MCQuarry at Adobe. She
asked me to post this to Blind-l on her behalf.

Greetings.

A friend forwarded on to me a posting from your mailing list
regarding getting access to the New York Times Internet
Edition, which is the the Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

I am in the Adobe Acrobat Engineering group and a big
part of my job is to make PDF accessible to the Blind
and Vision Impaired.

First off, on behalf of Adobe Systems, Inc, I want to
apologize for the fact the PDF and the Acrobat product
family are currently not accessible. If you would like to read more
details about the issues of why PDF is not accessible, including
problems with screen readers, please see my whitepaper that
is posted on the Adobe Web Server:
        http://www.adobe.com/Acrobat/Access.html

Secondly, I want to let you know that *soon* Adobe will be making
available the first in a series of accessibility enhancements
to Acrobat. In late October, around the Closing the Gap, Adobe
will have Beta versions of the Windows Accessibility plug-in
for Acrobat available free of charge through several channels.
With the Accessibility Plug-in, now only will you be able
to access PDF files with a Windows screan reading program, like
JAWS, but you will also be able to export easily too:

        Formatted ASCII
        ICADD-DTD Compliant ASCII
        HTML

If you would like to participate in the Beta program for the
Accessibility Plug-in, please send me email. Note that the
Windows Accessibility Plug-in runs only with the Windows
Adobe Acrobat (Reader and Exchange) products. In your email,
please let me know what Windows screen reader you use.

Note that we hope to have a DOS solution available for
Beta the very early 1996.
