GS8 Web Site

Many of you are aware of the new GS code that Norberto Salinas and I
began developing a year or so ago as a dual 6/8 dot uniform code with
the 6-dot part (GS6) modeled on the unified braille code proposal. I
believe that some people on this list looked at one of the earlier
versions.

We've released another version and think it is good enough for a wider
test. We've put up a compact but fairly complete description of the
code on the Science Access Project web site
http://dots.physics.orst.edu.

I would be very pleased if any or all of you would look over that
material and send comments before I announce it to the world at large.
I will also ask people on the ubc code development committee for
pre-announcement comments and suggestions. The most important
question is about the ultimate usefulness of the 8-dot code (GS8) or
any 8-dot code for that matter.

We have some downloadable files for GS8 evaluation that will work on a
tsi navigator or a tsi power braille that is using the old Gateway
driver. That is the only easy way to "get your fingers" on the GS8
code today. We are preparing some hard copy materials and support for
other refreshable 8-dot braille displays, but there are only 24 hours
in a day.

Thanks. I will really appreciate hearing from you.

John Gardner
