Yeap, I made my device in 1971. If I were to do it again, I would not only give it a volume knob and repetition-rate control, but I would provide a selection of tone-burst lengths,
as well as a frequency control for the tone generator. This could all be had with one chip nowadays, a timer/divider combination by Exar.
Let me know the extent for desiring such an extravigance.
