John,
I didn't realize that this was going to get posted to this list. It is
not a problem, but I thought Deane was mostly going to forward it to some
of his contacts abroad. This little project got started back in late
June when I had some minimal correspondence with John Gardener following
on the heels of the release of Triangle. I wanted to investigate the GS8
code, and I wanted to be able to practice writing and reading equations,
and, lacking the wherewithal to purchase a Braille Lite 40, I started
looking into the availability of an 8-dot slate. Dr. Gardner said he had
once looked into the possibility of producing one, but other projects
took priority, and so it never went beyond the initial inquiries. I
recently got myself hooked up with the folks that produce the click rules
that the national center sells, and using them as a marketing vehicle, I
started looking into the possibility of getting some injection molds
made, or finding a source outside the USA that would consider entering
into a marketing/distribution agreement with our company, and that's how
this got started. I am hoping that one of Deane's european contacts will
come through because, I am not sure that the demand for 8-dot slates is
going to justify making molds and going into production. There is also a
possibility of a metal slate, and we already have a producer lined up to
do that, if necessary, but I would rather not go that route if I don't
have to.
I will keep you posted as things develop. I am also interested in
feedback from other R&D , and science and engineering division members as
to their feelings about 8-dot braille in general, and 8-dot slates
specifically. You can contact me at: jrebman@netcom.com, or call me at:
(303) 604-9887, anyday between 8:00am and 10:00 pm mountain time. If I
am not there, leave a message, and I will get back to you.
Thanks,
Jim Rebman <jrebman@netcom.com>
