Hello, Bill,

Many people besides you have wondered about the reason for
changing "number sign" to "numeric indicator." The reason is
straightforward. The Nemeth Code has a whole family of indicators
-- fraction indicators, alphabet indicators, type-form
indicators, level indicators, and many more. The "number sign"
has all the properties of being an indicator and belonds to that
family. To avoid ostracizing the "number sign" and making it the
"black sheep" of the family, we renamed it so that it might take
its rightful place in the family of indicators and thereby
restore its self-respect. I hope that my answer sheds some light
on your puzzlement.

Abraham Nemeth, Ph.D.
