Seeing Steve Jacobson's posting I am cross posting what I put on
basr-l list. I don't know notes programming either, but
have no knowledge that it is prohibitive. I do know one thing that
might help with perspective. What is happening with Notes 'programming'
is exactly the same as what brought us all those wonderful mainframe
applications. Mainframe apps are database applications too!

If Lotus Notes version 4 is accessible with IBM Screen Reader/2 then
it is accessible because the IBM Screen Reader/2 developers put in the
effort to make it so. That is exactly the same reason that Microsoft
Word for windows is accessible by windows screen readers - the screen
reader developers decide to focus on Word and do the work to make it
accessible. Note: in neither case is the software vender (Lotus,
MS) the reason for access. Also, by the way, in neither case is the
operating system a serious player.

Software developers can make it a lot easier for the screen reader
developers and must be encouraged to do so. That is the reason
pressure of the type we see today is so very important. Without help
from the software venders, the screen reader developers don't have a
chance to keep up.

Don mentioned that a number of Notes applications were being developed
in the Department of Education. Guess where the responsibility lies
here. D or E must work to make their notes applications accessible.
