Hello,
Thanks for your message, and your offer to send information
about our project to the National Council on Disability distribution
list. Here is an overview of our project.
To help ease the transition to the Windows environment, the Iowa
Department for the Blind began work on project ASSIST With Windows
(Accessible Step-by-Step Instructions for Speech Technology With
Windows). The purpose of ASSIST With Windows is to create and
disseminate tutorials and configuration and documentation materials
for Windows based applications used in conjunction with a screen
reader.
Each tutorial will focus on a different combination of Windows
application and screen reader. The materials will cover Windows (3.x
and '95) and the following Windows applications: Microsoft Office
Suite, Corel WordPerfect Suite, Lotus Smart Suite, and Netscape
Navigator and MS Internet Explorer.
You may obtain an electronic and/or cassette version of the
tutorials. The electronic versions are in Word 6.0, ASCII, and a
Braille format which can produce Braille without using a Braille
translation program. All of the following tutorials are currently
available in electronic format:
1. Windows 3.1 with JAWS For Windows 2.0
2. Windows 3.1 with Window Bridge 2.3
3. Windows 3.1 with WinVision Solo 2.3
4. MS Word 6.0 with JAWS For Windows 2.0
5. MS Word 6.0 with Window Bridge 2.3
The cassette versions of Windows 3.1 with JAWS For Windows and Window
Bridge are available now. The cassette versions of Windows 3.1 with
WinVision Solo 2.3 and the MS Word 6.0 with JAWS For Windows and
Window Bridge are in production. We are maintaining a waiting list
for anyone interested in cassette versions of these tutorials.
The project team is working on these tutorials:
1. Windows 95 with JAWS For Windows and Window Bridge -- look for
this tutorial in electronic format around the third week of
September.
2. Corel WordPerfect 7 with JAWS For Windows and WinVision 97
3. MS Word 6.0 with WinVision Solo 2.3
4. Windows 95 with Window Eyes and WinVision 97
All materials created by ASSIST With Windows will be posted on our
web site at www.blind.state.ia.us/assist. Anyone who is interested in
the interested in the tutorials may download them from this site. If
you do not have Internet access or would like a cassette tape version
of the tutorials, contact Shan Sasser at (515)281-1338 or e-mail
Shans@blind.state.ia.us.
Your first set of tapes for each tutorial is free. Following the
first set, the tapes cost $3.00 per tape (approximately $6.00 for a
set). You may copy and distribute the tutorials to anyone who
is interested. We only ask that you not alter any of the information.
