I have just received the following message from
Barbara Pierce. It is good news indeed.
David Andrews
I have just received a call from Paul Izenstark, Senior Vice President and
group account director for the Cheap Tickets account at Colby Effler, and ad
agency that produced the distasteful ad with the blind beggar. He assures me
that they are pulling the ad from all stations. It may take as much as a day
or two to empty the backlogs, but the ad will be off by the beginning of the
week. He, of course, assured me that they had not intended to insult blind
people; that much we were already certain of, which I told him. I pulled out
Dr. Jernigan's line about our road to hell being paved with other people's
good intentions, but that it led to hell all the same. He wanted everyone to
know that the decision had been made, not because of the economic fear of a
boycott by blind people and our friends, but because it was the right thing
to do.
We can all be proud of this success and encouraged to learn once again how
effective we can be when we work together.
Thanks to everyone who helped,
Barbara Pierce
