FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 7, 2005
New sonic perceptual aid is now available from American Printing
House for
the Blind.
'K' Sonar" is a small, affordable, electronic travel device
developed for
use as a mobility aid for people who are blind and visually
impaired. It can
be hand-held or attached to a white cane. 'K' Sonar allows the
user to scan
the travel space ahead. It emits a signal that changes in pitch to
convey
information about the location and nature of the object.
Headphones give
audio feedback to the user. The American Printing House for the
Blind (APH)
has been selected as the sole distributor in the United States of
the 'K'
Sonar unit, developed by Dr. Leslie Kay, of New Zealand. Fred
Gissoni, who
is a technical adviser in APH customer relations, has tested
prototypes of
'K' Sonar over a period of several years. He says the device is
so
sensitive that he was able to detect the motion of a bird dancing
on a wire
above him as he stood in his back yard. Fred tells of being able
to hold
his place in line more easily because he can now detect when the
person in
front of him has moved forward. Many of those who have tried 'K"
Sonar have
praised the device for its potential to make everyday tasks easier.
A
recent customer contacted APH to say that he had found the device
to be even
better than advertised. He had used it for several tasks.
However, one
that stood out was that he was able use it to locate his emptied
garbage
cans which had been tossed haphazardly along the sidewalk by the
collectors.
