Dave,
Not sure if you know, but Steve Gomez wrote a program, really a 
version of the Book Courier transfer tool, which reads Newsline email 
beautifully.  I am not sure if it's a documented feature in the 
current version, or if he's also written a version for the BookPort, 
but the Courier version is fine indeed.
