Hello Colleagues:

Here is a note from the OANDM list. It occurs to me that this might
make a good senior project.

Project Title:
Light Rail Warning Device

The Problem:

Surface Light Rail systems such as those in Portland Oregon are very
very quiet. I lived in Beaverton and can personally attest to this. Blind
people cannot hear oncoming trains and can have difficulty crossing tracks.
This often occurs when at a transit station when a bus drops a person off
across the tracks from where they will enter the train. If there is noise in
the transit station, the trains are impossible to hear, and they do not blow
horns or ring bells. This was done so as not to wake up people sleeping in
nearby houses.

Design Challenge:

Design a device that can detect oncoming light rail trains and give a
warning.

Design perameters:

Device should be small and carried by the user.
