I thought David Lunney would put this here, but maybe he's not
subscribed anymore. This looks to be of interest, although I haven't
examined it yet.

Subject: IR spectra into weird music (demo program)
Dear folks:
I have just uploaded to my web page the program IRMUSIC0, a demonstration
program which generates weird electronic music from IR spectra and chromato-
grams using an algorithm invented by Robert C. Morrison and David C. Sowell.
This clever and elegant algorithm maps peak tables into musical notes and uses
the notes to build musical patterns. These patterns convey great deal of
information about the data, and are also fun to listen to. The algorithm can
be applied to any sort of data which can be represented as tables of x-y
pairs.
Morrison and Sowell developed their algorithm as a tool for visually impaired
and blind science students, but at the time they did their work (the early
1980's) computer-controlled music synthesizers were outrageously expensive.
Now, however, sound cards can be found in even entry-level PC's: the time is
finally right to adapt this valuable tool to run on PC's. I am attempting to
do this, and the demo program IRMUSIC0 is the first installment of my efforts.
The complete url for the demo program is
http://people.delphi.com/LUNNEY/IRMUSIC0.ZIP
This demo program plays only its own internal data set: a future version will
be able to read peak tables from disk files.
The program runs under MS-DOS or Windows 95, and requires a Sound Blaster-
compatible sound card.
This is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public
License (published by the Free Software Foundation) and is provided without
any warranty whatever.
Please forgive the multiple postings. I am trying to publicize this
astonishing program as widely as possible among science teachers at all
levels.
