Subject: Tips on canes

President Maurer forwarded the letter below. What are your reactions? Would
you want a tip tucked away in the handle of your NFB cane? Would you want
two spares? Speculate on the possible dimensions and physical form of a
storage handle.

I am sure that all of you guys are familiar with the research that lead to
the design of our present cane. It is the best cane in the world, you know,
and will remain so till the materials scientists come up with a new
formulation--or the price of boron whiskers drop by an order of magnitude.

Dear Mr. Maurer:

I would imagine that you have experienced the frustration of
losing the tip from your NFB white long cane. Since this seems
to happen to me at the most inopportune times, I usually carry a
couple of spare tips in my pocket when I travel.

It occurred to me that the cane itself would be an ideal place to
store these spare tips. If the screw cap on the top of the cane
could be enlarged to hold two spare tips, a blind person would
have one less thing to worry about. I think this modification
would be easy to implement.

I hope you will consider my suggestion. Let me know if you think
it is a good and/or workable idea. You are guaranteed to have at
least one interested customer!

                 sincerely,

                    Mr. Amirr M. Rahimi
