Hello all.
Re Tim Cranmer's question as to the possibility of designing
a cane handle that would accommodate cane tips: while I
think that this could be fairly easily done, I consider the
undertaking to be undesirable. Reasons: (a) the handle
might have to be slightly enlarged to contain the spare tips
(and IMHO the ergonomics of the present handle has been
tested and found satisfactory over many years); (b) the spare
tips would throw the cane out of balance necessitating a
redesign to shift the center of mass farther down the cane
to counterbalance the added weight in the handle and (c) IMHO
such a handle is unnecessary since cane tips fit easily into
pocket or purse. Why design something that isn't needed?
Furthermore, if we are to examine the design of NFB canes,
IMHO it would be better to come up with some sort of replacement
for the screw onto which the tips are fitted. In my experience,
that's the *real* weakpoint of NFB canes; the threads inside
the cane strip.
