MEMORANDUM
To: Members And Friends
          NFB R&D Committee

From: T. V. Cranmer, Chairman
Subject: Grants

In a recent message to this group I mentioned that we could pay for
the programming necessary for producing tactile graphs and charts.
While this is true, it resulted in some misinterpretation and a
couple of inquiries from Committee members. This gives me an
opportunity to explain a bit about how we work.

We have made substantial grants in the past to companies and
individuals to accomplish specific R&D goals. We paid a big part
of the cost to develop the NFB Braille Label Writer, which may yet
come to market. We made grants to engineers who made the
Speaqualizer to our specifications. Smaller investments have been
made in the light probe, a full-page braille slate, et cetera.
None of these grants were made to members of the R&D Committee.

When Committee members direct projects, and you all know that there
are several now doing that, they are not paid for their work. We
pay for equipment needed for a project, and for work done by others
when ordered by the project director.

I am tempted to list here the members who are now or in the past
managed a project for the Committee. You know that I can't do
that, for fear of overlooking someone. I trust you guys and (this
includes the women) know who you are and that you are justly proud
of your contributions.
