For those who were not able to participate in the NTIA virtual
conference, this announcement might be of interest. It is a way to
continue the discussions. I subscribed to the curbcuts list some time
ago, but have heard nothing so far.

Subject: [OPNACCES:135] CONTINUING DISCUSSION BEYOND THIS CONFERENCE
CONTINUING DISCUSSION BEYOND THIS CONFERENCE
We have now reached the end of this conference, but many of the discussions
are just beginning, and work in this area is obviously continuing.
If you would like to continue your discussions on the aspects having to deal
with access to the NII by people with disabilities, several of us would like
to invite you to continue these discussions on another listserv being
maintained by the World Institute on Disability (WID), the Trace R&D Center
at the University of Wisconsin, and the CPB/WGBH National Center on
Accessible Media (NCAM). This listserv is a part of the current NTIA
planning grant on access to the NII was was recently awarded to the above
named parties.
In addition, the Trace Center, in conjunction with its companion "Info
Curbcuts" project, is setting up a number of specialized topic listservs.
The Info Curbcuts project is focused on developing cross-disability
interface protocols for next-generation information systems. Next-generation
information systems" includes Web browsers, other Internet information
systems, touchscreen kiosks, interactive television (set-top boxes), on-line
information services, etc.
TO SIGN ON TO THE GENERAL WID / TRACE / NCAM LISTSERV on access to the NII
and next-generation information systems:
Send a message to:
Put nothing in the subject line.
In the body of the message, type:
subscribe uaccess Bill Clinton
(assuming your name is Bill Clinton; if not, substitute your own name).
THE SPECIALIZED SUB-TOPIC LISTSERVS:
We will be announcing these listservs on the general listserv over the
course of the next two weeks. Some of the potential topics for these
subtopic listservs are:
DOCFORMAT-- a discussion around document formats, including discussions of
the relative accessibility of ASCII, HTML, SGML, PDF, and other proposals
for documentation standards for use on the Web and other electronic media.
BLINDLVACCESS -- Discussion focused on issues regarding access by
individuals who are blind or who have low vision.
DEAFHHACCESS -- Discussion focused on issues regarding access by
individuals with hearing impairments or deafiness.
COGACCESS -- Discussion of cognitive and language issues regarding access
to public information systems.
PHYSACCESS -- Discussion of physical access issues with regard to public
information systems.
KIOSKS -- Discussion focused on issues regarding access to public kiosks,
particularly touchscreen-based kiosks, by people with disabilities.
BROWSERACCESS -- Discussion of how to make Web browsers more accessible.
This also includes Web infrastructure issues. The developers of Mosaic
(NCSA), Lynx and E3 will all be monitoring this list for ideas and
suggestions. All are interested in making their products more accessible.
UNILINK -- Discussions on the development of a standard approach for a
low-cost ($5-10) infrared link to allow people with physical disabilities
and people who are blind to use assistive technologies with public
information systems.
UNIFLEX -- Discussions on Uniflex, a cross-disability seamless human
interface protocol being developed for use on public and mass-market
information appliances.
DOCNAV -- Technical discussions regarding standard conventions for
navigating text on screen in public information systems when in voice mode
(for use by people who are blind or who have other print/reading
disabilities or difficulties).
ALLOFTHEABOVE -- a "receive only" listserv provided as a convenience to
individuals who would like to follow all of the listservs in this group.
As can be seen, some of these topics are set up to allow general discussion
on specific aspects of disability access. Others are set up in order to get
input on and allow discussion of specific projects of the Info Curbcuts
program, as a way to extend the development team and to get broader input to
these projects.
Please DO NOT SUBSCRIBE to these SUBLISTS yet, as we have not finalized the
topics or finished setting up the listservs. The purpose for the
disability-specific listservs is to allow more in-depth "working"
discussions along particular threads without overwhelming individuals with
the volume across the whole area. General comments should be sent to the
general "uaccess" address.
For more information on both the Universal Access and Info Curbcuts
projects, you can sign up to subscribe to the "uaccess" listserv. We will
be posting summaries on the projects and the various activities to uaccess
over the next couple of weeks.
