MEMORANDUM
To: Members And Friends
          NFB R&D Committee

From: T. V. Cranmer, Director of Research
Subject: Research priorities
Date: January 8, 1995

Sighted scientists and engineers tend to design products for the
blind based more on their knowledge of engineering than the
problems resulting from blindness. We all understand that. And
so, it follows that we have an obligation to provide guidance to
the field that will avoid wasted effort and resources.

I ask that each R&D member and observer on this group express your
opinions regarding basic research, engineering projects and other
observations to be collected in a general paper to be discussed and
debated at our January meeting of the R&D Committee. Once refined
by the Committee, a list of research priorities will be submitted
to interested groups.

Keep in mind, that research projects that we include on our
priority list may or may not be addressed by NFB, but may be more
appropriately addressed by other organizations, academe or
government entities.

Here are a few trigger words to brainstorm. Please add others:

GUI access
Tactile Map reading
Tactile graphics
Tactile bandwidth
Large braille display
Materials research
Braille reading strategies
Braille teaching strategies
Computer games for the blind
Electronic orientation aids
Access to kiosks
Access to Internet resources
Blind-man-machine interface
