ACCESSING MICROFILM

Hello:

This is in response to the recent messages discussing access to microfilm.
There are some products on the market that can scan microfilm and make TIF
files from the images. The TIF files can then be reading using OCR software.
Most os these systems are a bit pricey starting at $35K and going up to over
$100K. There is one product called Screen Scan for $11,990.00. It is a
retrofit on a microfilm reader and will scan an image in 9 seconds. The image
is then sent to a PC via SCSI and stored as a type IV TIFF file.
Information is on it way to me. One thing to note is that the quality of the
image and the results of the OCR will depend on how good the priginal image was
in the first place.

Some of the commercial machines are capable of taking a reel of microfilm and
generating scans of all the images. If I recall correctly, a reel of 16MM
microfilm has about 6,000 images on it. This would do a good job of filling a hard
disk.
