Who uses microfishe? Northeast Missouri State University (the
institution to which I am economically bound!), gets rated by Money
Magazine as one of the best college buys in the country--fifth last
year. One of the criteria happens to be how much library money is
available per capita. Even though much money is spent on providing top
of the line service to the student, vast amounts of information,
especially newspaper referencing, comes to the library in the form of
mircroform or microfishe. News Bank chronicles over 400 newspapers
around the country. You can imagine the piles of forest in the library
if each issue were to be collected. I have my Chemistry class do a lot
of surveying the popluar press for environmentally related articles.
When I want to read one of thier finds, I put through a request at the
reference desk, and the article is photocopied and scanned for me.
Since the librarians do the scanning, they know how important it is to
be particular about the clarity of the photocopy. Many chemical
journals will provide back issues only on microfishe even though CD-ROM
technology will eventually takeover.
