High frequencies of short duration are best. The phyase differences between ears afford precise localization. Temporal difference (from one ear to the next) is important for localization as well. The time difference from emination of the sould to

receipt of the echo tells you how far away it is.

Rather than do endless library research, just try the different materials -- cane shafts, tip materials, and isolators from tip to shaft -- and approach this like a good violin maker chossing his wood.
