Electric Cars and Noise

All this discussion of canes, cane tips, and other sound sources has made
me think about something I heard the other day. You may have heard that
General Motors will be selling a $35,000 electric sports car in
California, some time in the near future. I can't remember exactly when,
but I think 1998.

It seems to me that an electric car will not make as much noise as those
employing internal combustion engines. It may be more difficult hearing
electric cars, making it more difficult to cross streets.

While this isn't necessarily a topic for research, it is at least a valid
topic for discussion, it seems to me. One qhestion is how much of the
sound of an oncoming car comes from the engine and how much comes from
the tires, wind noise, rattles, etc.?

Any thoughts?
