LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION NOTICE

FROM: James Gashel

DATE: September 18, 1997

This notice provides final information on the amount of
funding for the Library of Congress, National Library Service for
the Blind and Physically Handicapped program for fiscal year 1998.
The conferees on the legislative branch appropriations bill met on
Wednesday, September 17, and reported out an agreement. the
conference report, which is expected to become law, provides an
appropriation of $46561 million for the Books for the Blind program
begining October 1, 1997 through September 30, 1998. the
comparable amount for the current fiscal year has been $44,963
million.

Therefore, the conferees have agreed to provide an increase of
almost $1.6 million for our library services. This is by far the
largest increase in this program's budget in many years. It is
not, of course, the total amount sought, but the increase will make
a difference, nonetheless. Congratulations to all who worked on
achieving this outcome!!
