Hello Colleagues:
Below is another idea for a project. Several projects are needed to deal with brailling materials. I have attached a Word and appended a text version.

Robert
------------------
Project Name:
Document markup and Comparison Tool
The Problem:
In order to create good braille from marked up documents, it is essential that the markup accurately reflect the printed document. Layout, fonts, headers, footers, footnotes, references etc. must be accurately marked up. If a document is not properly marked up, it is impossible to produce good braille. Work is in progress to define a set of elements for DAISY documents, but it is known that the characteristics of a document must be preserved.
Design Challenge:
1. Use a marked up document in DAISY format and compare it to the original print document.
2. This could be done by comparing it to a scanned copy or PDF file.
3. Create a system that will display the two documents side by side and check for differences. This might require a dual monitor set up. The system would scroll both documents at the same time.
4. Users should be able to insert new markup and resinch the process when necessary. The edited document will be saved.
5. The display should show the original page, marked up page and markup code.
Design Parameters:
Marked up documents will be in NIMAS or DAISY. It should be noted that the DAISY standard will be revised.
Students will need to research document scanning software and systems that use voting algorithms for creating scanned output.
