Hello Colleagues:

     Here is another idea.

Regards,

Robert

----------------
Project Name:
Accessible Virtual Clay

The Problem:
SensAble Technologies http://www.sensable.com has a product that engineers can use to create virtual 3D models. The Product known as Virtual Clay utilizes the Phantom Arm a haptic device. The user can "feel" the item being worked on. This was demonstrated at our meeting in 2005. The problem is that the application is not known to be accessible with JAWS. It should be noted that a request was circulated to the committee to make Pro/E software accessible using speech and a Phantom. This would be a step in that direction. It is important that blind engineers have a way to design objects using computer based techniques.

Design Challenge:
The Virtual Clay software will need to be modified or other pluggins written so that all commands can be performed from the keyboard. JAWS scripts will be needed to allow the software to be usable by those who are blind. Although the cost of the equipment is toward the top end of the $10,000 limit, the benefits will be great.

Design Parameters:
Students will need to carefully research the software and try to ensure that upgrades will not render inoperative their work.
