ONLINE SERVICE OFFERS EASY ACCESS TO THE
INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY FOR THE BLIND
COMMUNITY
York, PA -- June 15, 1994 -- Cyberia Communications, Inc.
announced today that it will expand its services to offer a blind
user interface, making its online service more easily accessible
to the blind community. In the fast paced world of online
services, major growth and expansion has been seen in graphical
user interfaces. New graphical interfaces create an easy to use
"point and click" environment for sighted users, but have ignored
the community of blind users who are also trying to access the
online world. When a user logs into Cyberia they will be prompted
with a choice of three interfaces: Normal Emulation, Graphical
Rip Emulation, and Easy Access for the Blind Emulation. When a
user chooses the blind interface, all graphics are stripped, and
the menus are presented in an easily readable format for
interfacing with the various screen reading devices that are
currently available. The new blind interface is currently being
beta tested, and is scheduled for release on June 20th.
In conjunction with the release of its blind user interface,
Cyberia will be creating a specialized section where blind users
can discuss topics of interest with other blind users from around
the globe, and obtain software for their home computer specially
made for easy blind usage. Software programs available include
screen readers, braille translators for word processors, speech
interfaces for WordPerfect, lists of books available in braille,
talking checkbook management programs, and other useful utilities.
"We are very excited to be able to make the online world more
easily accessible to this community." said Sara Viener, Vice
President of Cyberia Communications. "Our goal when we started
Cyberia was to make the online world more user friendly. We have
been very successful at doing this for the visual community, and
we are proud to be able to do the same for the blind community."
