Hello:

I saw this article in the newsgroup comp.newprod. It describes a news service
from Clarinet. This looks like it has lots of good useful information in it.

[Note: This announcement reflects changes from earlier this year. Their
appearance in comp.newprod was delayed.]

ClariNet Communications, now in its 6th year of publication of an electronic
newspaper delivered in USENET format, announces that earlier this year it
changed its primary sources of general wireservice news to The Associated
Press and Reuters, the world's two largest wireservices.

AP Provides its special AP Online service, and Reuters provides the contents
of its North American general and international wire, and its North American,
Asian and European business wires.

ClariNet gathers material from a wide variety of sources, including
these newswires. Human editors, assisted by software, classify and
arrange the stories into 300 different USENET style newsgroups, which
are then fed via traditional USENET methods (such as NNTP) to sites that
purchase site licence subscriptions. (See below for new prices.)

The result is an electronic newspaper which subscribers read on their
own machines, with all the speed, convenience and flexibility that entails.
Approximately 3MB of material is published each day, around the clock.
Usually what users read in ClariNet newsgroups today is what will be in
tomorrow's newspapers. ClariNet is the oldest provider of commercial
content to the Internet and USENET marketplace and is read daily by
over 70,000 people.

ClariNet sources include, in addition to AP and Reuters:
Bay City News -- an SF Bay local newswire
Newsbytes -- daily computer industry news
Matrix News -- a newsletter about the internet
Stock Quotes -- for daily technology stock summaries
Syndicates and independents -- for columns, comic strips and
                        features

The addition of Reuters has resulted in a large improvement in the
quality of international and business news. AP's domestic USA coverage
is generally accepted as unmatched.

As a result of this change, ClariNet made significant changes to its
newsgroup structure. ClariNet has 300 newsgroups. Articles are usually
crossposted to more than one group. The new structure has groups devoted
to:

                All major industry categories
                Financial categories
                Technology categories
                Issues and Subjects
                All 50 U.S. states
All major countries and geographic regions
News priorities (newsgroups for the most important stories)
                Major sports
                Major entertainment/leisure topic areas
                Features.

A complete list of groups would be too voluminous to post here. Contact
ClariNet through any of the methods described below for the full list.
Some notable new newsgroups include:

                clari.tw.new_media
                        - Coverage of the internet and other new media issues
                clari.biz.industry.*
                        - Expanded coverage of 31 different industries
                clari.tw.top
                        - Top technology and science news. The 'front page'
of the world's only constantly updated science
                          news service.
                clari.news.briefs
                        - Hourly summary of the top news from the AP.
                clari.world.mideast
                        - Hierarchy for news from various mid-east nations.

        NEW CLARINET PRICING

ClariNet's new pricing system for business and governmental customers is
much simpler than our old scheme. Our prices are based on the number
of "networkers" on the network to receive a site licence. This is all
employees using the network for communications (E-mail, netnews, WWW, gopher,
etc.) It is expected that only a fraction of these people will make
active use of ClariNet newsgroups and the price reflects that, but the
price is the same no matter how many read it, and there is no need to
actually meter or audit usage.

First 100 networkers: $3/month each. (Minimum 20 networkers)
        Additional networkers: $1/month each.

Thus a site with 1000 networkers pays $1200 per month.

This price provides access to the entire ClariNet electronic newspaper.

ClariNet does not generally sell to individuals, unless they have their
own personal USENET server site. Contact ClariNet sales for information
on these terms.

Note: ClariNet continues to offer a two-week free trial to any site ready
to handle USENET news. We find most people don't know what an electronic
newspaper is like until they experience it, so we recommend this. There is
no cost or obligation. See also www.clarinet.com and the newsgroup
biz.clarinet.sample for free samples.

        Educational Pricing

ClariNet's educational pricing is similar to the old structure. Schools
are divided into classes (K12, small, medium, large and jumbo) and pay
a flat monthly fee. For example, a small college (under 5,000 full time
enrollment) pays $200/month.

BBSs and dial-up public internet access systems)

ClariNet's service for such systems is substantially changed. A new
product, known as our Basic BBS service, has been established to meet
the needs of this sector. The basic ClariBBS service includes a
subset of AP Online known as AP BulletinLine, and all other ClariNet material
except for that from Reuters. AP BulletinLine features full coverage
of sports and entertainment, but only summaries of general, financial and
international news. This costs 40 cents per account on the system.
The full AP Online and full Reuters coverage can be added at a higher cost,
contact sales@clarinet.com for a quote.
