Project Name:
Low Cost Face up Scanner

The Problem:
It is difficult and time consuming to scan bound books with a flatbed scanner. Laying a book flat causes stress on the binding especially if the book is pressed down in order to minimize page curvature. After each page is scanned, the book must be removed from the scanner in order to either scan the opposite page or turn the page. This excessive handling can cause dammage to books especially older ones.

Design Challenge:
Create a scanner that scans books in a face up position. Units to do this exist, but they are very expensive costing in the tens of thousands of dollars. The scanner must be TWAIN compliant so that it can be used by existing OCR software. One approach would be to utilize two high resolution cameras (One for each page of an open book.

Design Parameters:
The book to be scanned needs to be held in a V configuration. A user needs to be able to selectively scan both pages, left side, or right side. When scanning both images, they must be kept in sequence. A highly desirable option would be to be able to scan large format material by adjusting the scanner so a page can be scanned flat.
